The Overseas Research Scholarships (ORS) provide funding to support outstanding full-time postgraduate research students from outside the UK and European Union.
The awards pay the difference between the international rate of PhD tuition fee and UK/EU rate. Therefore, successful candidates will still be required to provide funding for the remaining UK fee (minimum £3,390 per year from September 2009) and living costs (approximately £10-12,000 per year).
Прымальнасці
To be eligible for ORS consideration applicants must:
* be liable for the international rate of University tuition fee
* have not have held an ORS award before
* Устанавіць кантакт з іх прапанаваным навуковым кіраўніком кандыдата ў Манчэстэры і аб сваёй поўнай падтрымцы ўзнагароды
* have submitted a formal PhD application or be holding an offer of study for entry no earlier than October 2009
It is essential that candidates can provide evidence of support for an ORS from an academic based at Manchester. Ideally this should be the prospective PhD supervisor from within the Faculty. If you are yet to establish contact with an academic regarding your proposed PhD study the Faculty can arrange to support you in finding a suitable supervisory match.
Awards are renewable for up to a maximum of three-years subject to satisfactory academic progress.
Existing students within the first year of their research (MPhil or PhD) in the Faculty are welcome to submit an application with the support of their academic supervisor(s) to aid progression into Years 2 і 3.
Academic criteria
ORS awards are highly sought after and therefore applicants must be of the highest quality in terms of research potential and scope for independent learning. The minimum criteria for any applicant are:
* Academic achievements must be equivalent to a first class or very good upper second class honours degree. In the case of candidates with degrees that are not classified, the candidate must have attained overall marks placing them in the top 10% of their graduating year (preferably top 5%) or hold a Masters degree with merit or distinction. Candidates holding a Masters (or equivalent) are particularly encouraged to apply
* They must possess outstanding promise and research potential as evidenced by research output (papers, publications), novel research findings or via supporting statements from their referees
ORS awards are not specific to any medical or related discipline and applications are welcomed from candidates seeking PhD places within any of our Schools. The potential of candidates to excel in their academic field will be the primary consideration when awards are agreed.
