Yayasan Wingate menawarkan sokongan biasiswa untuk calon dari negara-negara Komanwel mencari bantuan kewangan terhadap projek PhD mereka. Mereka diarahkan pada pemohon yang disebabkan melakukan perintis, kajian interdisipliner nilai ilmiah. Projek tidak boleh jatuh ke setiap kategori pembiayaan konvensional sebagai Yayasan bertujuan untuk mempromosikan kajian yang benar-benar lintas-disiplin.
Beasiswa ini direka untuk membantu dengan biaya dari sebuah projek khas yang mungkin berlangsung sampai 3 tahun. Anugerah total rata-rata adalah sekitar £ 6,500 dan maksimum dalam satu tahun adalah £ 10,000.
Pelamar melaksanakan dalam bidang penyelidikan perubatan perlu memberi bukti bahawa projek yang dicadangkan adalah yang bersifat lintas-disiplin, tidak sesuai dengan tubuh tradisional utama pembiayaan kajian perubatan. Selain, kriteria entri berikut ini harus dipenuhi, sebagai calon harus:
* Tinggal di Kepulauan Inggeris selama tempoh aplikasi
* Mampu memenuhi Jawatankuasa Beasiswa yang mereka memerlukan sokongan kewangan untuk melakukan pekerjaan yang diproyeksikan
* Mampu menunjukkan mengapa projek (jika ia mengambil bentuk kajian akademik) tidak mungkin untuk menarik Research Council, British Academy atau agensi Kurang dana utama
* Warga Inggeris atau negara Komanwel, Ireland atau Israel; atau warga negara lain Kesatuan Eropah (asalkan mereka telah tinggal di Inggeris sekurang-kurangnya 3 tahun)
* Usia 24 atau lebih pada 1 September

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) disokong oleh gabungan Majlis Research UK dan industri. Mereka sangat berprestij dan menarik bayaran penuh sekolah antarabangsa serta menyediakan rawatan wang saku (£ 13.290 dalam 2009/10) dan sokongan terhadap kos projek. Universiti biasanya diperuntukkan antara 4-8 anugerah pada tahun ajaran.
Keperluan
The scheme is open only to student nationals from:
* India
* China
* Hong Kong
* South Africa
* Brazil
* Russia and the developing world, as defined by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)

The eligible countries are all those in Part I of the list, plus Russia and Hong Kong. With the exception of Russia and Hong Kong, none of the countries in Part II of the list are eligible.
Successful candidates are expected to hold the equivalent of a UK First Class honours degree and have graduated within the top 5-10% of their academic cohort. Candidates will also be expected to have proven research potential as demonstrated by their contribution to novel research, significant publication output and ability to demonstrate independent research skills and techniques.
It is expected that DHPA candidates must:
* be liable for the international rate of University tuition fee and fall within one of the nationalities eligible for the awards
* be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential and academic achievement
* have not previously studied at PhD or equivalent level (either in the UK or overseas)
* have not have held a DHPA award before
* have established contact with their proposed academic PhD supervisor at Manchester and have their full support for an award
* have submitted a formal PhD application or be holding an offer of study for entry no earlier than September 2009
Applicants must be intending to undertake research within a discipline area rated at grade 5 or 5* in the 2001 UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). If you are unsure whether your discipline area qualifies for this please contact the Faculty for clarification.
Often Dorothy Hodgkin awards are targeted at nationals from specific countries or working in certain disciplines so academic eligibility alone is not always enough to qualify you for award consideration. Details on such restrictions will be posted on this website as soon as they are known.
Awards are renewable for three to four years of PhD study subject to satisfactory academic progress.
